The Big Society in Action Today

Another real life situation from a family in Surrey, this one involving Council Tax Arrears

Mr Y has council Tax Arrears and is facing demands from a Bailff Company instucted by the local coucil to recover their money.

Assisting Mr Y I have had several meetings with the local council on Mr Ys behalf whats interesting with this case I really want to illustrate and highlight is both the restrictions imposed and that exist within the local Council firstly by legal and adminstrative Bureaucracy and then the mental limitations on the staffs thinking process.

Mr Y had a letter from the bailiffs indicating he needed to pay £x perfectly reasonable, Mr Y owes the money and the council have needed to use Bailiffs because Mr Y for whatever reason hasnt complied nothing wrong so far.

However Mr Y receives paperwork indicating he owes £x no breakdown of the figures which i queried on his behalf. I was told the bailiffs are very efficient and used by the council all the time. I pointed out that despite that the statement didnt properly indicate the breakdown of what this customer owed them and it was deemed by me that the council should help and accept some responsibility for the lack of supportive information.

After a few moments deliberation the lady form council recoveries went to a spare office and phined bailiffs. Rather sheapishly she came back to the desk to explain that the bailiffs had made a mistake and the £x figure was £200 to high.

My point is the Bailiffs arent and werent very efficient i have other eveidence on other cases the council officials are reluctant to want to listen, investigate and accept change is needed

So if the Big Society is to work where we help in local communities help and improve the lives of others could somebody tell David Cameron that this also applies to our Over Bureaucratic, inefficient Local Authorities where the Ceo often earns more than twice our Prime Minsiter and for what
There is no evidence they are twice as good
